The School District of Jenkintown School-Age Child Care Program

The School District of Jenkintown is pleased to present our School-Age Child Care Program for the 2017-2018 school year. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.

Q: Why is the The School District of Jenkintown establishing their own School-Age Child Care Program?

A: In these difficult fiscal times, with numerous budget constraints and uncertainties, The School District of Jenkintown has extensively evaluated options when balancing their budget. The maintenance of current programs, staff, and student opportunities were priorities throughout this process.  We believe that by providing our own child care program, we can continue the same level of care and academic excellence we deliver throughout the school day to our students. In lieu of payment for child care services by participants to an outside provider, the District can utilize this revenue for general district operations, which in turn preserves our existing priorities.

Q: Who will staff the program?

A: Mr. Purcaro, our Elementary School Principal is the Director of our program. Our administrative team will conduct the same rigorous interview process used for all Jenkintown School District vacancies. We recognize the valuable contributions the MELC child care staff has made and seek to continue this same level of care. We welcome all qualified applicants to apply for staffing positions including current and past employees.

Q: When will the staff be hired?

A: We hope to have our staff in place by June 30, 2017. Over the summer we intend to host Meet and Greets with the staff for our students and families to meet our staff.

Q: Will there be a limit to the number of students that can be enrolled in the program?

A: It is our goal to staff the program to accommodate all interested families?

Q: Where will the program be located?

A: The School District of Jenkintown School-Age Child Care Program will be located in our Elementary School and on our school grounds. It is our intent to utilize classroom and recreational spaces currently used for the MELC child care program.

Q: What will be the hours of operation?

A: The program’s schedule and hours of operation will remain the same. It will run Monday through Friday on school days from 7:00 am to the Start of School for morning care and from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm for aftercare. In addition, child care will be available on shortened days and teacher in-service days. Holiday care will be available when district offices are open.

Q: Will part time care be available?

A: Part time care options are available as they were with MELC.

Q: What will the daily schedule include?

A: Our daily schedule will include academic, social, and recreational activities, as well as snack time. Operation of this program by The School District of Jenkintown allows extension of curricular content into the child care program. Enrichment opportunities and special programs are also planned.

Q: Will the cost of the child care program remain the same?

A: The rates for the 2017-2018 school year will remain the same as the rates offered by MELC in the 2016-2017 school year.

Q: Will drop off and pick up procedures remain the same?

A: Yes, drop off and pick up procedures will remain the same as in previous years.
